First Stop: Colorado

We started out with a three-day drive from Piedmont, California, to Telluride, Colorado. But instead of three days, it felt like a lifetime. I managed to go through eight magazines, around a thousand songs, I drew a ton, and talked and talked and talked with my family. But all in all when we got to Telluride it was totally worth it. Telluride is a small town in the mountains where my great-grandfather was a miner and wrote books about it. I am staying in a cabin with my aunt and uncle and their two dogs. The view is amazing. When you go outside you can see Mount Wilson and Mount Sunshine, and we are right next to these people who have three horses that we got to ride.

My favorite thing I got to do so far was a two-day river rafting trip that actually took place in Utah but it was along the Colorado River. There were tons of huge beautiful reddish rocks. It took an hour getting the rafts blown up and all our stuff on them. After that it was soooooo fun!!!!!! The rapids weren’t that big because the water was really low, but it  was super fun eating Pringles that were flavored barbecue, salt and vinegar, and guacamole. (I liked the barbecue the best.) I also loved talking to my aunt and uncle and their two friends, and jumping in the freezing water and then floating downstream.

When it started getting late we found this awesome camping spot. It was a deserted small beach with rocks and trees. The cool thing is, it had this huge swing made out of wood and rope; the bad thing is, the campsite was infested with huge black and red ants. Later that night there were lots and lots of bats everwhere. My dad and  I found rocks and threw them up to see if the bats would chase them … it didn’t work, but it was fun throwing rocks so we kept doing it.

The next morning, we rafted to the end of the 20-mile trip and drove to a motel in Moab, Utah, so we could go see the arches at Arches National Park the next morning. I was sad the river trip had to end; it was really special.

I have done other stuff too in Telluride. For example, I went to this really cool candy store. It had lots of 1950’s furniture, and super good burgers and sandwiches. It also had miles of candy and ice cream.

I rode a dappled gray named Abby and a palomino named Sonny.

I really like Colorado but I am sort of homesick. I really wonder what Piedmont Middle School is like. Please email me or make a comment below.

  1. Colly,

What a great update! I really enjoyed reading this, and while I’m glad that you enjoyed our river trip, I was especially pleased to see the picture of Kyle under the arch (something I missed) and the one of you on the horse riding up the switchbacks. It is SO much fun to get your perspective on things (it helps that you’re such a great writer), and I hope that you keep posting regularly!

  6. Hi Colly! I love your blog! You look like a GIANT in the picture from Washington DC – ha ha ha. Sounds like Telluride has been really fun. One time your mom, your Uncle Brian and I went to ride the horses next door to the cabin (we didn’t have permission…we just grabbed some bridles). Turns out one wasn’t broken (it was actually only a couple of years old). Your mom got sooooooo bucked off! She went FLYING! So she and Brian rode double on one and I rode on another. Ha! That’ll teach us to ride some stranger’s horses without permission! Say hi to your brother from us. We really miss you guys lots –
